Preview of new performance video work

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by secretnaomi

Welcome to a preview of the stills from my new performance video entitled ‘Siva in motion’ (2012).

‘Siva in motion’ (2012) is a new performance video work by artist Shigeyuki Kihara, commissioned by Auckland Art Gallery (New Zealand) to premier in their upcoming group exhibition entitled ‘Home AKL’ curated by Ron Brownson, Senior Curator of Contemporary New Zealand and Pacific Art at the Auckland Art Gallery.

‘Siva in motion’ (2012) is an extension of Kihara’s previous performance work entitled ‘Taualuga; the last dance’ (2006), where the visual cue of ‘Siva in motion’ echoes the work of Futurist photographer and physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey (1830–1904). The work of Futurist photographers in the Victorian era led to the early development of cinema across Europe.

Kihara uses the choreographic movements of the Samoan ‘taualuga’ – a stately dance technique of the Samoan taupou, or high-born ceremonial village maiden, to re-tell the experience of the tsunami which effected Samoa in September 2009.

‘Home AKL’ is the next major exhibition to held at the Auckland Art Gallery, Aotearoa New Zealand, opening on 7 July 2012.
