Unnerved: The New Zealand Project
Gallery Of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia
1 May – 4 July 2010

Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) presents the second in a series of country-specific exhibition projects focusing on its contemporary collections with Unnerved: The New Zealand Project.

Holdings of contemporary work from New Zealand have grown rapidly since the early 1990s, partly through increased awareness and interest in the Asia Pacific Triennial exhibitions.

Unnerved explores a particularly rich dark vein that recurs in New Zealand contemporary art and cinema. Psychological or physical unease pervades many works in the exhibition, with humour, parody and poetic subtlety among the strategies used by artists across generations and genres.

Artists include:
Laurence ABERHART
Mark ADAMS
Duncan COLE / Shigeyuki KIHARA
Shane COTTON
Bill CULBERT
FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS
Jacqueline FRASER
Max GIMBLETT
Florian HABICHT
Gavin HIPKINS
Julian HOOPER
Lonnie HUTCHINSON
Richard KILLEEN
Peter MADDEN
Alex MONTEITH
Anne NOBLE
James ORAM
Fiona PARDINGTON
Michael PAREKOWHAI
Campbell PATTERSON
Peter PERYER
Nathan POHIO
John PULE
Lisa REIHANA
Greg SEMU
Ava SEYMOUR
Michael SMITHER
Sriwhana SPONG
Michael STEVENSON
Lorene TAUREREWA
Yvonne TODD
Sima URALE
Ronnie VAN HOUT

April News from Sydney

Posted in News with tags , , on April 30, 2010 by secretnaomi

Talofa lava and Greetings,

I’m currently based in Sydney attending various meetings in relation to the upcoming Edge of Elsewhere visual arts program for Sydney Festival 2011 and 2012, co-curated by Gallery 4a Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and Campbelltown Arts Centre, Sydney, Australia.

Edge of Elsewhere is a major three-year project with the Sydney Festival involving invited artists creating work in partnership with Sydney communities. This project involves me working in my capacity as an artist, curator and producer.

This weekend I will be volunteering at the Boomalli Australian Aboriginal Artists Co Operative art auction gala to help keep the grassroots community centre open and functioning for the indigenous community in Sydney.

I will start my residency with Multicultural Arts Victoria in the next two weeks, from 13 May until 24 June 2010. More events will be triggered during my residency which will be sent to you in the next couple of weeks.

Posted in Events with tags on April 7, 2010 by shigeyukikihara

Voices of Art: an evening of art for animals will be an elegant soirée fusing the contemporary art world and the animal protection movement.

The evening will commence with a draw from a series of prize pools. Expertly assisted by long-time Voiceless supporter and animal lover Clover Moore MP, Lord Mayor of Sydney, each of the 50 entry ticket holders will be given the opportunity to enter a number of draws to win:

* One of 20 works of art by nationally and internationally recognised artists Shaun Gladwell; Tim Storrier; Ai Weiwei; Imants Tillers; Peter Atkins; Monika Behrens; Dadang Christanto; Cherry Hood; Jonathan Jones; Janey Laurence; Dani Marti; Charwei Tsai; Guan Wei; John Young; Michael Zavros; The Kingpins and Shigeyuki Kihara.
* One of 30 ‘experience and indulgence’ prizes

Following these draws, Roger McIlroy of Nevill Keating McIlroy and former Deputy Chairman of Christie’s Asia, will auction two extremely valuable works of art which have been generously donated by renowned artists Tim Storrier and Ai Weiwei.

Drinks and canapés will be served throughout the evening in the magical surrounds of the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation.

Event details: Tickets are $2,000 each. Only 50 tickets are being offered. One ticket provides entry to 2 people (but only one opportunity to win in the raffle draws).
Where: Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, 16–20 Goodhope Street, Paddington NSW.
When: Thursday 29th April 2010 @ 6.00pm for 6.30pm.

The artworks and ‘experience and indulgence’ prizes will be drawn at the event from 7pm. The auction will take place once these prize draws have concluded.
